After 12 hours of travel, we touched down in beautiful San Juan, PR. The beaches were perfect and the weather was just right! Our hotel was the crown jewel of the city…in 1975—and from our observations, it hadn’t changed since! Despite the outdated décor, our room overlooked the gorgeous blue ocean and brightly lit skyline of the city. We spent the week loosing the battle to jet lag, but enjoyed the relaxation and delicious food.
Our most memorable experiences were overcoming Molly’s fear of swimming in the ocean and biking through Old San Juan, the oldest settlement within the U.S. We rented some goofy-looking, bright yellow bicycles (basket, bell and all!) and biked around the coastline of the city. It was SO amazing! Vibrant, bright, colorful houses, buildings, cobblestone roads, beautiful artwork and lots of “interesting” smells surrounded us! We also felt surrounded at times by emaciated cats and creepy lizards!
We were fortunate to be able to tour Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristobal which date back to the 16th and 17th century. The dungeons and tunnels and lookouts were so cool! It was an unforgettable experience! We hope to go back someday and visit the rainforest and other parts of the island.
